VANS X TIMBERLAND (LITERALLY) MEET IN THE MIDDLE FOR A HISTORIC FOOTWEAR COLLAB

As staple brands within the culture for decades, Vans and Timberland have played a part in reshaping the style landscape. From Vans being a part of some of skateboarding’s most legendary moments to Timberland being dubbed the honorary footwear of NYC, neither of these labels has any shortage of history to pull from.
While both have reached the proverbial footwear mountain top in their respective lanes, a collaboration between the renowned skate shoe brand and the famed outdoor footwear label just makes sense. Having been adopted and repurposed in various subcultures, Vans x Timberland meets in the middle (literally) for this capsule, blending histories to produce something completely new.To embody the true essence of "meeting in the middle," we set up shop at the exact halfway point between Vans’ headquarters on the west coast and Timberland’s on the east; mixing the best of both worlds.
Set in rural Nebraska, Vans and Timberland partnered with locals to demonstrate a refreshed take to styling this iconic partnership, bringing the shoes to life in an unexpected location. For so many, each brand exudes a different way of life, but when examined further, they share a similar ethos that rewards exploration and utility.
While the Powerbeats2 Wireless headphones had become the best-selling sports headphone, most consumers were unaware of its hands-free phone calling. To promote this, we worked with Marcus Mariota, the standout quarterback from the University of Oregon who was predicted to be selected early in the NFL draft. In the days leading up to the draft, we worked with Beats to be part of his experience, surrounded by his friends and family, and show a side of Mariota’s personal life in his hometown that most people don’t get to see. A day before the draft, we dropped our film that connected Beats to Mariota and celebrated this huge moment. On the day of the draft, we seeded product to key players including Mariota and two other top draft picks. All of the top players took their draft calls live-on-air with their Powerbeats2 Wireless – during the first round sponsored by a key competitor. Beats product was front and center for all the world to see.

After just dropping her debut album, we entered the “Badlands” where director JODEB created a dystopian world that would become our setting, with Halsey as the fearless leader. Filmed in the incredibly cinematic Ka'a'awa Valley, on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, the video takes a “Hunger Games” and “Divergent” sort of vibe as she and the people of her community train for battle. Then unsuspectingly, a group of men with machine guns capture Halsey and attempt to put the singer to her death. However, her loyal followers come to their heroine’s rescue and they all escape, giving new meaning to the lyric, “the city’s ours until the fall.” … Halsey spoke about the project saying, “It’s this idea of these kids who are part of a generation where pop culture is so heavily influential that diversity doesn’t scare them the way it scared our parents and their parents. We’re more accepting of different walks of life …. So I think the ‘New Americana’ is racially ambiguous, people who are proud of their culture and they own it, possibly not from a binary of gender.”

"'P.A.W.' is a song mostly about “Redlining” and how shitty it feels to be considered less than others. It’s about the moments in life when you’re reminded of that fact. The feeling that you’re always being watched." - Isaiah Radke
The Kansas City Chiefs return to their home field on opening day after coming off their first Super Bowl appearance and win in 50 years. Coming off of an extremely racially-charged off-season, with the death of George Floyd and the acknowledgement by the NFL of not being outspoken enough in the fight to end racism, the hometown heroes, in partnership with their opposing team members, the Houston Texans, make a decision to pose for a moment of silence before the game's start.
No knee was knelt, no flag was flown, yet the response they received by their own fans was one that sparked controversy and conversation across the nation. Was it really a boo? So many attempted to deny it, yet eye-witness accounts and shameless streamed video to platforms like Facebook proved otherwise.
This was a boo, on their home field, by their own fans, while making their first appearance as reigning Super Bowl Champions.
